Afternoon tea with a difference

By Caroline Richards, Everyday Wimbledon
Last year, our life group was seeking God about how He could use us to bless the community around us. Together with the older members in our group we unanimously felt we wanted to do an event to bless the older folk.
So, after making enquiries and doing some planning, we held an afternoon tea on Saturday 23 January (often a quiet and low month after Christmas).
We invited residents of nearby Kathleen Godfree Court, Queen’s Court nursing home, senior members previously and currently connected to Everyday Church, along with friends and neighbours.
We had a wonderful afternoon with our approximately 35 guests. Each of us, including our children, took an active part in serving and befriending our guests; several others in the pastorate joined to help us and baked delicious scones and cakes.
After enjoying tea together and getting to know one another we had a quiz organised by Josh and Theo. We then had a sing-along led by Phil and Jonny, followed by Ursula sharing some of her testimony and reading an inspirational poem.Bruce concluded by sharing some thoughts entitled, ‘God’s not finished with me yet!’

As we said goodbyes we gave out chocolate and flyers for our Everyday services. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all!

We had some lovely feedback, particularly from a local 90 year old, who said, ‘I had the best afternoon and how lovely it was to get out!’ She plans on coming to visit us at a Sunday service now.
Our hope is that something will come out of this event that will provide an opportunity for this age group to meet up regularly.

In conjunction with the Outlook Trust, we would like to develop a team of volunteers to regularly visit a care home in Wimbledon to befriend residents and hopefully run occasional services. If you or your life group would like more information or want to get involved, please contact David Featherstone.
