your light will break forth like the dawn…

6 ‘Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter –
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.’
Isaiah 58:6-8
These verses penned by the prophet Isaiah some 2,700 years ago contain an incredible promise – the Lord will visibly acknowledge, bless and protect those who have regard for the poor… As we’ve reached out as a church in new ways over the past couple of months, the Lord has kept this promise to us in spectacular fashion. I want to share two of my favourite stories of the last 4 weeks…

Brett was baptised at Everyday Kingston on the 2nd February 2014. He first came to us as a guest on the first evening of the Winter Night Shelter; recently homeless and out of work Brett was grateful for a place to stay and for the prayers of God’s people in the he morning: one of the members at Everyday Kingston, Julia, prayed with him that he would know God’s love and that he would find accommodation and a job quickly. We didn’t see Brett again until he returned two weeks later to tell us that he’d found a job and accommodation: he asked what he could do to help us in return… He helped us set up for our carol service, he cleaned the church windows and generally got stuck in. On the 22nd of December he responded to the word of God and committed his life into the hands of Jesus Christ… A gifted young man, Brett has been a huge asset to us in Kingston and is learning more and more of what it means to be a beloved son of God…

I met Saavik on the 71 bus early on Saturday evening on my way up to church; he was with his girlfriend Jade who was due to be performing at the YMCA /KCAH Sleepeasy launch event at Everyday Kingston later that night. Noticing Saavik’s severe limp I asked how it had happened and told him how Jesus could heal him… Saavik said that he’d suffered sciatic nerve damage in a car accident 2 years earlier, when two cars had smashed into the driver’s side of the vehicle he was driving. He admitted that the pain and the limp had been getting worse, not better, with time; he said that while he saw no reason to believe in any specific God he’d be willing to let us pray for him later that evening, saying “I’ll try anything…” When a couple of us prayed for him a few hours later Saavik, to his own astonishment, was completely healed, jumping, stretching and running upstairs in a way he hadn’t been able to since before the accident… He scooted upstairs to the balcony and moments later we watched his back brace come sailing over the railing – Jesus the healer and redeemer of mankind showed again that he is the God of all love, compassion and power. Many people at the SleepEasy event saw Saavik healed or knew him enough to see the miracle that had taken place and Jesus’ story was told over and over again that evening.

We follow a Saviour who speaks and moves amongst all who will acknowledge him and call upon his name. Please pray for more and more evidence of God amongst us as we open our doors to a whole host of young people over the coming weeks with the launch of our Cook & Eat pilot programme in Kingston and the opening of the Underground after school club in Southfields… contact us on difference@everyday.org.uk if you want to get involved…
