Whatever you do…

God loves your work. God is with you when you work. God has plans to use you powerfully through your work.

We know this because of the anchor verse for our workplace ministry, Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

To press in to this more, we’ve been running some workplace events at Everyday Wimbledon. We gather together to worship God, encourage one another, connect with those in industries similar to ours, and discover what God wants to do in our workplaces. We draw people from all different working backgrounds; those who work throughout the city, those looking for work, and those for whom their workplace may be their home or another place.

In March 2019, we held an event called Everyday Workplace – Faith and Wellbeing in the Workplace. Wimbledon member Laura Marinello attended this day, and this is her report of what she encountered.

How do ideas like Faith, Hope, and Love, play into wellbeing in the workplace? How can we help ourselves and our colleagues to work more harmoniously? How do we find meaning and fulfilment in work and life when times are hard?

In today’s world, mental health and wellbeing are as big a topic as physical health. There are dozens of apps, retreat centres, counselling services, books, documentaries and seminars all focused on mindfulness and de-stressing our busy lives. Particularly in London, we can frequently find ourselves in high-pressured and face paced environments, not only at work but in our home lives as well.  So how do we as Christians deal with the impact this can have on our spiritual and mental health?

I have a background in Psychology, so some of the theories we discussed at the last Everyday Workplace event were familiar to me, and may be to you as well – physical needs vs creative needs, the importance of social relationships and positive mental attitudes – but it was encouraging to take these concepts and investigate deeper from a Christian perspective. You don’t need to be a Psychology expert to follow along. The sessions were engaging, interactive, super informative and easily applicable. I’m really looking forward to the next event this year and would highly recommend to anyone to come along!

Our next workplace event is on Saturday 5th October, from 9am-1pm. Breakfast will be served, and it will be a great opportunity to worship, encourage, pray and connect. Tickets are free, and you can register here.
